Americans give hundreds of billions of dollars to charitable organizations every year. For many donors, the decision of which nonprofit to support is made quickly, based on familiarity or an emotional appeal. But taking even a small amount of time to evaluate an organization before you give can make the difference between your donation creating real impact and being absorbed by overhead or, in the worst cases, misused entirely.
At Peters Bandura LLC, we bring a unique perspective to this question. We work with nonprofit organizations on their accounting and tax compliance, so we see firsthand what financial health looks like inside a well-run charity — and what the warning signs look like when it is not. Here is what we recommend when evaluating a nonprofit for a donation.
Step 1: Verify the Organization Has 501(c)(3) Status
If you want your donation to be tax-deductible, the organization must be recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) public charity or private foundation. You can verify this status using the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search at apps.irs.gov. Do not rely solely on the organization’s own claim of tax-exempt status — confirm it independently.
Step 2: Review the Organization’s Financial Health
Every 501(c)(3) organization with annual gross receipts over $50,000 is required to file a Form 990 with the IRS, which becomes a public document. The Form 990 reveals the organization’s revenue, expenses, executive compensation, program spending, and net assets. You can access these filings through ProPublica’s Nonprofit Explorer at projects.propublica.org/nonprofits or through GuideStar at candid.org. When reviewing financials, look at the ratio of program expenses to total expenses — well-run nonprofits typically direct 70% or more of their spending directly to programs and mission rather than administrative and fundraising overhead.
Step 3: Use Independent Charity Watchdog Resources
Several independent organizations evaluate and rate nonprofits based on their financial health, accountability, transparency, and effectiveness. Charity Navigator at charitynavigator.org rates nonprofits on a scale and provides detailed financial analysis. GiveWell at givewell.org focuses specifically on evaluating effectiveness and impact for giving recommendations. Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance at give.org evaluates nonprofits against 20 governance and accountability standards. These resources do the heavy lifting of financial analysis and can help you quickly compare organizations in a similar space.
Step 4: Evaluate Mission Alignment and Impact
Beyond the financials, ask whether the organization’s programs are actually producing the outcomes they claim. Look for outcome data, not just activity data. An organization that reports meals served, children tutored, or animals rescued is reporting activities. An organization that measures improvement in food security, academic performance, or adoption rates is reporting outcomes. The most effective nonprofits are transparent about how they measure and report their impact.
Step 5: Look for Transparency and Governance
Strong nonprofits have active, independent boards of directors, publish their financials and Form 990s prominently, have an audit or financial review performed by an independent CPA, and respond to donor inquiries clearly and promptly. Reluctance to share financial information is a red flag. A well-governed nonprofit welcomes scrutiny.
